The mother of gunman Martin Bryant yesterday expressed deepfelt sympathy for the victims of the massacre and their families.
Speaking for the first time since her son was taken into custody, Mrs Charlene Bryant said in a statement prepared by solicitors and given to the ABC that the incident had been very traumatic for her. She had had many inquiries about her son and asked that she now be left alone.
Bryant has been charged with one count of murder following the shootings at Port Arthur, where 35 people lost their lives. He has entered no plea.
